Peterborough has been ill-served by political dogfights. We believe the interests of Peterborough residents is better served if issues are considered on their merits rather than judged according to how much political advantage can be gained by one side or the other. This is a policy we practise as part of the Minority Parties group on the city council.
Does that mean the Liberal Party doesn't believe in anything? Not at all. Liberals believe in:
The freedom and equality of the individual The basic right of everyone to choose what to do with their own life. That everyone shall be free from: crime, poverty, ill-health and ignorance. That we are all equal before the law.
The role of government, be it at national or local level, is to provide a framework within which individuals can live their lives. A truly free society demands that we respect our neighbour's rights and property - provided it does not deprive someone else of their rights and property. At a national and international level the Liberal Party and Liberal Democrats differ on various issues, over Europe for example. Like many people in this country The Liberal Party is not happy with the overly bureaucratic European Union. Nor do we feel a case has been made for the pound to be replaced by the Euro. We believe UK citizens should have the right to vote on any EU initiatives that would have a major affect on our government and way of life, such as the recent 'EU constitution through the back door' Lisbon Treaty.
Locally we are prepared to work with other groups to give communities the power to decide on local issues and support elected area councils. Power to the people is no shallow slogan; it is something we have actively practised in areas such as Dogsthorpe, through active involvement in the local community and regular Focus newsletters. This commitment to the Dogsthorpe community has resulted in Liberal councillors being elected in the ward for more than 25 years.
So how would the Liberal Party change Peterborough? Where do we start? Here's a brief checklist of the changes we would like to see. Go to the following pages for more information
