So the energy suppliers are passing the burden of increased costs to consumers arguing that they have in the past absorbed cost increases, but these big over inflation busting increases do no-one any favours.
The expert advice  is not to change your supplier just yet. Many providers of gas and electricity  are  many now announcing increases.

Frugal Living in the UK (www.frugal.org.uk )     This  seems to give some interesting advice, which we confess we have not tried, but there may be some handy tips .  Although cutting back will help reduce bills we do urge all not to put their health at risk.
