A personal viewpoint from our chairman

Our current voting system is not only grossly unfair, it is corrupt.
We have a National Government elected by only 26% of the voters, barely more than one voter in four. We have local councils elected by even fewer voters, and controlled by political parties with no people mandate what-so-ever.

In a democracy, each and every vote should be of equal value, that each vote counts and it needs to be cast. Alas, with our first-past-the-post voting system, this is simply not true. Parties with concentrated small pockets of voters can monopolise parliaments & councils.

To put it simply, we are governed by a parliament and local councils, that do not represent the British Public. We are represented by MP's and Councillors, in which the majority of their electorate voted against them!

Voters are being cheated. The present system produces bizarre election results, and even some of the more 'enlightened' Labour supporters now know this minority elected dictatorship type of government can no longer be sustained.

Is it not ironic that we in England still use the first-past-the-post electoral system, while everyone else uses other, more representative, electoral systems?
In Northern Ireland it is the 'Single Transferable Vote' (STV), in Scotland & Wales for their National Assemblies it is the 'Additional Member System (AMS) and soon to be STV for their local elections! Even London elected its new Mayor by a system called 'Supplementary Vote'.

Congratulations

Leslie Tatlow from the Welland area was the overall winner of  the  Evening Telegraph's Women of Achievement Awards.  Leslie's work is well known to local councillors and typically  she  told The ET she was "overwhelmed" by her triumphs, adding: "I didn't expect to win."  Getting nominated for this award is a great acheivment in itself and we congratulate all nominees for their work and we can do no better than quote the ET "All are worthy of the awards and we applaud them for all their effort and hard work, much of which has, until now, been unrecognised."

Congratulations too  for all those who work behind the scenes for the benefit of their local communities. We as councillors attend several local fetes and fundays  all are enjoyed by the local residents , and bring people together . We can't name everyone but we acknowledge your effort
